People love and trust experts, but sometimes being an expert in your content field actually makes it harder for your customer to accept your offer. Here’s how to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Today I want to talk to you about the perils of being an expert and how that can have a detrimental effect on your content marketing and copywriting IF you’re not careful.
If you write like an expert, you may be leaving money on the table with undecided customers walking away. Of course, that won’t happen to you, you’re a savvy Hit Publish listener who’s going to learn the tricks of the trade to make sure your expertise doesn’t trip you up.

Amy, you rock!
Thanks for making the show so entertaining. It’s like going a little adventure with you every week. I’ve been a listener since episode 1 and I can say without a doubt that your advice just works.
The 2-way conversation tip inside the ’email etiquette’ episode is on point. I actually added a quick 2 question survey to the opt-in process that’s generating hundreds of responses from my audience (213 survey entries to be exact). I ask “what are you goals?” and “what are you struggling with right now?” and the data has changed the direction of my business.
So now I have a pretty good idea what content to create for my email subscribers. 😉
And because of this particular episode, I’m working on my sales copy to make it super clear WHO the offer is for and HOW it can help them. I thought I had a pretty good grasp on this, but after listening today I noticed the message could be improved.
Thanks for all you do,
– Hector
Thanks for your comment Hector – apologies for the slow reply, I’ve been away all last week completely (just about…) unplugged. 🙂
I’m thrilled you had such a great response to your email survey – and to know that you’ve got plenty of on-target inspiration for creating content you know your audience really wants.
Keep us posted on how you get on and thanks again for listening!
Everyone gets nervous when the teacher uses you as an example for the class.
Luckily, I passed the test! But I must admit that I labored over that copy on my home page thinking you just might be checking up on me.
My site really has become the critical piece for my business. Although I started writing following a content marketing mindset, dougfrancis.com became an inbound marketing platform for me unintentionally. The site works with consumers because it is different. In essence, I wanted to create a real estate site that I (or my ideal customer) would find helpful, smart, and up to date.
Your podcast is excellent and always gets me thinking of ways to apply your ideas. Thanks again for the mention and know that I have been recommending your entertaining/educational show to my friends.
Great to see you here again Doug!
One of the things I love about your site is how personable and accessible it is. You are not only selling the service you do, but selling the idea of working with YOU. Your positioning as an approachable expert comes across really well.
Thanks so much for listening and for the recommendations, for every new listener you send my way, you can earn 4.5 Hit Publish points! (Still not redeemable at any major outlet but give me time…) 😉
Thank you for the nice compliment. I consider my site to be my PR Department rather than a lead capture platform. Consumers like it, yet the gurus always seem to look at me with puzzled faces and ask me, “does this really work?”
It works with my personality, so, I’m not going to change my strategy. And again, consumers respond by hiring me.
Let me know when you get cool t-shirts made up and then I’ll cash in those Hit Publish points.
I just added a few lines to each course on my courses page — “This course is perfect for…”
When there was just one product, the choice was easy. Now there are three and more to come so I appreciate the nudge to help people make the right choice for their needs!
Brilliant to hear Belinda!
It’s funny how as our businesses / products evolve, we need to remember to evolve the copy as well (mental note – do a content audit Amy!!)
Glad to hear it’s even easier for your customers to choose the perfect product for them. 🙂
Amy,
I just discovered your show, and boy! am I glad I did. Since I’m in the process of revising my coaching packages and redesigning my website(s), your advice on helping my customers understand what I offer and what it means to them is on target.
Thank you.
Welcome to the Hit Publish family Flora! I think you’ll like it here, everyone is super-smart, friendly and on a mission to create great content. 😉
So pleased that the show has been able to help you while you’re in the planning / redesigning mode. Don’t forget to let us know how you get on and if there are any specific content challenges you’d like me to cover on a future show!
